Summary – Sunday Message 21/09/2025

“Guarding What the Spirit Has Given” (Ephesians 4:3)

Paul writes, “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3, NKJV), giving the church a Spirit-filled vision of how believers are to live together.

  1. Endeavouring – Spirit-Empowered Diligence

    • The word “endeavouring” (Greek spoudazō) means to be diligent, eager, and zealous.

    • Unity is precious but fragile if pursued in human strength; only the Spirit empowers us to guard it.

    • Without the Spirit, “we strive in the flesh, and pride wins”; with Him, “we strive in grace, and Christ’s love wins.”

    • Application: Pray daily, “Holy Spirit, help me guard unity today,” and treat unity as a priceless treasure.

  2. Keep the Unity – Spirit-Given Oneness

    • Paul does not say “create unity” but “keep unity,” because it is not man-made but Spirit-given.

    • “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body” (1 Corinthians 12:13).

    • “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling” (Ephesians 4:4).

    • Like an orchestra under one Conductor, the Spirit brings harmony out of diversity.

    • Application: Celebrate diversity in gifts, cultures, and personalities, and when disagreements arise, let the Spirit mediate before words divide.

  3. The Bond of Peace – Spirit-Made Glue

    • Paul calls peace the “bond” (sundesmos) that holds the body together, like ligaments connecting bones.

    • Without peace, churches dislocate. But Christ Himself is our peace: “For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one” (Ephesians 2:14).

    • Peace is also fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is … peace” (Galatians 5:22).

    • “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful” (Colossians 3:15).

    • Application: Let peace act as an umpire in relationships — pause, pray, forgive quickly, and be a peacemaker.

Conclusion
Paul’s threefold call reveals a Spirit-filled church life:

  • Endeavouring → Spirit-empowered diligence.

  • Keep the Unity → Spirit-given oneness.

  • Bond of Peace → Spirit-made glue.

Unity is not optional — it is God’s design. When believers walk in it, the church shines as living proof to the world that Jesus is alive.
