SERMON SUMMARY — Knowing Our Enemies (Part 1)

Sunday 30/11/25

Theme: God has given believers spiritual armour, not for decoration, but for war. If God equipped us with the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, and sword of the Spirit — then we clearly have enemies. But Scripture tells us our enemies are not people.
Ephesians 6:12 — “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood…”

Every believer must learn to recognize and overcome three major enemies if we want to walk in victory.

1. THE FLESH — The Enemy Within

Before we fight anything externally, God tells us to look inward.
The flesh is our old sinful nature — our habits, desires, reactions, and attitudes that oppose God.

Ephesians 4:20–32 — Put Off the Old Man

Paul instructs believers to:
• Put off the old man
• Be renewed in the spirit of the mind
• Put on the new man created in righteousness
• Remove lying, sinful anger, corrupt speech
• Remove bitterness, wrath, clamor, evil speaking, and malice

Malice = intention to harm.
Where malice is present, unforgiveness is also present.

Ephesians 4:32

God commands us:
“Be kind… tender-hearted… forgive one another as Christ forgave you.”

Unforgiveness becomes a major open door to spiritual attack, emotional torment, and spiritual stagnation.

Jesus’ Warning About Sin — Matthew 18:8–9

Jesus teaches us to deal with sin decisively. Not self-harm — but radical repentance.
“Cut it off before it cuts you off.”

Victory Over the Flesh Requires the Spirit

Galatians 5:16–17 — The Spirit and flesh are in constant conflict. Walking in the Spirit stops the flesh from ruling.
Romans 8:13 — “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

Key truth:
You cannot defeat the devil until you first deal with the flesh.
Victory begins with surrender, repentance, and discipline.

2. THE WORLD — The Enemy Around Us

We live in a world system designed to pull us away from God.

The world:
• glorifies sin
• celebrates pride
• normalises compromise
• pressures believers to fit in
• hates truth and holiness

The believer must resist the cultural pull and stand firm in Christ.

Closing Thought (Part 1)

We have real spiritual enemies — and until we recognize them, we cannot defeat them.

Today we dealt with the first enemy: the flesh, and introduced the second enemy: the world.
Next, we will explore how to stand firm against all three and walk in true spiritual victory.
